Zvi Ruder asked me to forward to you about his new book. I have not read it yet.

This book is in essence a small part of a much larger volume by the author still in preparation. The purpose of this book is to shed an additional light, for the broad, well educated public, on the profound symbolism of the national colors, the blue and white, as they have developed from the Biblical times to Israel’s national flag of today. The author’s purpose is to try to explain what the reasons for the incredible, thousands of years-long endurance of the blue and white colors may be and what ensures the acceptance of these colors by the people of Israel until this very day. The Biblical, traditional, philosophical and political roots of the Israel’s flag are addressed comprehensively, for the first time, with an exhaustive bibliography and explanatory notes, in English, given at the end of each chapter. Separate chapters deal with such issues as the traditional outlook on the symbolism of the red color and possible reasons for its absence from the national symbols (both flag and coat of arms), the symbolism and flag use of the colors purple, green, black, etc. The book is available either from the author (Zvi Ruder, 18 Watertown Street, Lexington, MA 02421, USA, Fax +781-861-9142) or directly from the publisher (Shamir, 6 David Yellin Street, P.O.Box 5749, Jerusalem 91057, Israel, Tel: +972-2-5385384 or +972-2-5385702, Fax: +972-2-5385118, e-mail: <bhtorah@netmedia.net.il>).

I must admit the the name of the book really fit its content. It is a most compehensive work on the roots of the Blue-White flag that I have ever seen.

From Vexilloligical point of view, I think that this book can give a deeper and brader look in the only national flag that not only represent a state but also a religion.

Zvi is also take a look at the use of other colors in Israeli flags (mainly military flag) and his book includes many color plates (Not the best, I must say) of International and local flags including Israeli historical, political and military flags.
