About the Flag of Jandaia do Sul

The flag of Jandaia do Sul was approved by Law No. 751/72 of 5 May 1972, designed by the heraldist and flag designer Professor Arcinóe Antônio Peixoto de Faria. It is green with a white saltire surcharged with a red saltire. On the center is a white disk on which appears the municipal coat of arms. As is common with designs by Peixoto de Faria, the flag is described (inaccurately) in the law as conforming to Portuguese heraldic traditions for municipal flags. The coat of arms represents the municipal government, the white circle the city in which it has its seat. The circle is considered a symbol of eternity. The stripes forming the saltire represent the radiation of municipal power throughout the territory of Jandaia do Sul. The green quarters represent the verdant rural areas of the municipality. The coat of arms was adopted under the same law that approved the flag, following its "heraldic revision" by Peixoto de Faria. It is described as being placed on a Samnitic shield ensigned with a silver mural crown of six towers (of which five are somehow visible in the depiction. On the white shield is a bird of the species known as a "jandaia" (a type of green parakeet from which the city takes its name), with wings extended, perched on red branches with green leaves. In the cantons in chief are two black axes and in base a hand plow of the same color. The shield is enclosed by branches of coffee; the scroll is inscribed with the name of the municipality flanked by the dates 1942 (when Jandaia do Sul was founded) and 1952 (when it was incorporated as a municipality). The axes symbolize the historic period of pioneering exploration and colonization of northern Paraná, while the plow shows the agricultural basis of the municipal economy. The proportions of the flag are 7:10. There is a pledge to the flag of Jandaia do Sul, delivered with the right arm extended, palm down (!): "I swear to honor, love, and defend the municipal symbols of Jandaia do Sul and to fight for the enhancement of this city with loyalty and perseverance."
