Resolution of the Senate on the State Flag of 8th October 1897

Senatsbeschluß über die Staatsflagge vom 8. Oktober 1897

Resolution of the Senate on the State Flag of 8th October 1897

State Secretary Hagedorn reports:
It has been considered to fly a Hamburg flag from the Phönix balcony during the inauguration festivities of the new town hall; because of the size this flag must have, the town hall architects wish that it is not only showing the three-towered castle, but the greater state arms of Hamburg.

The reporter remarks that the occasion seems appropriate for the creation of a Hamburg state flag, the use of which should be reserved to the state authorities, and which should be determined for the decoration of state buildings, unless for this the old admiralty flag or the service flag for the state buildings serving the purpose of shipping and for state ships is to be employed.

In what regards the form of the state flag, it is recommended not to choose, as commonly usual, a white flag with the state arms, but to design it after the pattern of the Bremen state flag, i.e. to place a rectangular white field in the centre of the red flag, in which the greater state arms is represented.

The Senate declares its approval and authorizes, that a flag produced according to the proposal of the reporter be used during the inauguration of the new town hall.

Resolution of the Senate on the Hamburg Coat-of-Arms of 26th March 1902

Resolution of the Senate on the Hamburg Coat-of-Arms of 26th March 1902
Upon the report by State Secretary Hagedorn the Senate approves, that the Hamburg state arms, if it is shown with the helmet, the crest and the mantle, but without supporters, is called "middle state arms", whereas in the "greater state arms" the supporters are added, and the "lesser state arms" consists only of the escutcheon with the castle.

Resolution of the Senate regarding the Flagging on Official Buildings of 3rd June 1949

(An unofficial English translation follows the official German text.)

Senatsbeschluß betreffend Beflaggung der öffentlichen Gebäude vom 3. Juni 1949

Resolution of the Senate regarding the Flagging on Official Buildings of 3rd June 1949

  1. After the federal flag has been determined by Article 22 of the Basic Law for the Federal Republic of Germany, the Senate issues the following regulation for the flagging on official buildings and state flag staffs:

  2. On official buildings the federal flag and the Hamburg civil flag have in principle to be hoisted together. Thereby the federal flag is hoisted at the right-hand side, the Hamburg flag at the left-hand side (as seen from the interior of the building lokking to the street). The flagging of state flag staffs shall be handled accordingly.

If there is only one flag staff on an official building or on a public place, only the federal flag shall be hoisted.

If there are three flag staffs, the federal flag shall be hoisted on two of them, the Hamburg flag shall be hoisted on the third.

On state buildings exclusively or chiefly serving the shipping, the admiralty flag shall be hoisted instead of the civil flag.

On the arcade of the town hall the senate flag shall be hoisted.

  3. The Senate holds exclusive decision on general flagging of the official buildings and state flag staffs as well as on partial flagging on a general occasion. On an occasion concerning only a single office, the head of the office can decree the flagging for its buildings.

  4. Flagging starts regularly at 7 o'clock and ends at nightfall.
