County Flags

Landkreisflaggen

I drew the Palatinate county flags according to descriptions in Debus 1988. The book shows the arms of all political entities of the Palatinate (Pfalz) area in the south-west of Germany and describes their flags. Most flags have horizontally and vertically hanging versions, but for the county flags they are basically the same. The arms are taken from Ralf Hartemink's International Civic Arms website but resized and recoloured to fit the FOTW colour standards. For the banner [hanging flag] versions I chose a format of 5:2 which looks about right. However, other formats are also possible. A map of the area and the districts (made by me) is at this webpage.

County-Free City Flags

Flaggen kreisfreier Städte

There are twelve county-free cities (kreisfreie Städte) in Rhineland-Palatinate, and I have got flag images for eleven of them.

Grossmaischeid

[Grossmaischeid (Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany)] 2:1
by Ivan Sache

The inhabitants of the village (Dorf) of Grossmaischeid decided in early summer 1996 to design a flag based on the village arms. The flag was designed in collaboration with the flag manufacturer Bonner. The flag was released for the village fair in 1996 and widely used next year for the celebration of the 850th anniversary of the village foundation. The flag is now used for every festivity, including the private ones. The flag was so successful that the first and second releases of flags and masts were exhausted before acknowledging all requests, thus motivating a third release.

The flag is a vertical banner with proportion 2:1, vertically divided blue-white. The shield of arms is placed near the top of the flag, with the [unfortunate] mention of the village name in the shield chief. The shield is outlined in black, as well as its chief and vertical division. The inner elements of the shield are not outlined. Source: municipal website (lost URL), including a large colour photography of the hanging flag.
