Civil and State Flag 1947-1952

Landesflagge

Considering that there was a Land Sachsen between 1947 and 1952 in East Germany, the rank flags of which are known, I wonder if the white-green bicolor was also readopted in 1947, or at least used during that period. And if it was, I wonder whether both versions (with and without coat-of-arms) were used.

Santiago Dotor, 14 February 2001

I am sure you are right. Kannik 1957 shows the bicolor without arms, but gives no details about adoption.

Norman Martin, 14 February 2001

According Kannik 1957, pp. 39 and 171, the flag of Saxony was white over green bicolour. The only information given is however, that the colours are the same as when Saxony was a kingdom. Considering that this information is given in a book published in 1957 —when the states or Länder in the German Democratic Republic (GDR) were already abolished— I would suppose it can at least point to a de facto use after 1945, even though nothing is said about official adoption. Since the rank flags you point to have white and green as their dominant colour aside from the arms, I would be surprised if the 1947-1952 flag was not the white-green bicolour.

In Schurdel 1995 p. 84 is said, that the flags of the lands in the GDR were abolished in 1952 — but nothing is said about how they looked. On p. 182 in the same book is said, that there was still no act of law on the flag of Saxony when this book was edited, but that the old white-green flag was mentioned in the 1992 ordinance on the use of the arms of Saxony. It is also used de facto during and since the uprisings against the communists in 1989 (ibid p. 183).
