Burgos Province

The provincial flag of Burgos is purple with the coat-of-arms, like many other provincial flags. The provincial flags of Spain are rarely used, but at the 1998 13th Spanish Vexillogical Congress I had the pleasure of seeing two samples of the flag: one of them was in the Diputación Provincial (provincial government) building. The other was in the room where the Congress (sponsored by the Burgos' Diputación Provincial) took place. A cooperation agreement was signed by the Diputación through which the SEV will create the c. 1200 local flags and shields of the province. In the Congress room were six flags: Europe, Spain, Castile and Leon, Burgos province, Burgos city and SEV.

  • flag (not officially adopted yet) used since 1979: "De color morado, con el escudo de la provincia en el centro", i.e. violet with the provincial coat-of-arms in the center;
  • coat-of-arms: adopted by the Diputación Provincial [provincial council] on the 9th November 1877.

Burgos City

The flag of the city of Burgos is red over maroon, with coat-of-arms in the middle (coat-of-arms on white background).
