Overview

Boat ensigns are square, with white Greek letters on a blue field.

The letter size specifications are as follows:

  • height is 5/11 of the ensign width
  • width is 3/11 of the ensign width
  • downstroke width is 4/55 of the ensign width.

Source: Flaggenbuch (1939-1941) [neu], so the ensigns might be outdated.

Ivan Sache, 26 August 1997, emended 5 February 2000

If I may venture an explanation, the letters would simply be the initials of the service Greek names.
Certainly I can explain the L(ambda) from Limani (port) and Y(psilon) from Ygiia (Health - origin of the word Hygiene).

Herman De Wael, 18 July 1999
