Overview

In the new administrative division of Croatia Djurdjevac gained the status of a city only in 1997, when, on the celebral session of the Council in February 1997 the new coat of arms adopted in March previous year, were presented, presumably after the approval from the Ministry was gained. A golden peacock on a cannonball reminds to the legend, according to which the city was saved from Turkish siege by fireing peacocks instead of cannonballs. The stars are taken from the Ernust family arms. Sigismund Ernust, ban (vice-roy) of Dalmatia, Croatia and Slavonia since 1494 rebuilded the fortress of Djurdjevac to its present shape. Until 1997 Djurdjevac had status of a community. Adopted: 1 March 1996.
