Indore/Holkar - Former Indian state, now part of Madhya Pradesh, central India; 8.075 square miles. Its capital, Indore, was also capital of the Central India Agency. It was founded in 1715 and grew rapidly under Maratha dynasty of Holkars which was established in 18th century by Malhar Rao Holkar, an officer of the peshwa; lost much of territory after defeat by Lord Lake 1804; accepted British protectorate 1818. Title: Holkar.
