Athens, Greece, had originally hoped to host the centennial games of 1996, but will now be hosting the Games of the XXVIII Olympiad in 2004.

Turin, Italy, has been appointed to host the 20th Olympic Winter Games. Though as a bid city it did have a flag, no flag has been presented for the event, as yet.

Several cities have bid for the right to host the Olympic Games of 2008. The final selection of these were:

• Beijing, China
• Istanbul, Turkey
• Ôsaka, Japan
• Paris, France
• Toronto, Canada

In July 2001 in Moscow, Beijing was appointed as host city for the Games of the XXIX Olympiad in 2008.
