The arms date from the 16th century and are seen on the seal of the city from that century. Older seals show the bar, but surrounded by leaves, not vines. The bar is derived from the arms of the Lords of Manteuffel, who had many privileges in the city from the 12th until the 19th century. Later seals all show the same composition until the early 20th century.
