Other sitesTimi�oara (in Hungarian Temesv�r, in German Temeschwar, in Serbian Temi�var) is a city in Timi� County of Romania (in the valley of Timi� River). The city has got 334.115 inhabitants (9,5% Hungarian, 4,0% German, 1992 census). The city has got its name from the Castle of Temes (v�r means castle) Neighbouring communities are: S�nandrei, Becicherecu Mic, S�c�laz, S�nmihaiu Rom�n, Giroc, Mo�ni�a Nou�, Ghiroda and Dumbr�vi�a communities.
The first mention of the settlement is from 1212 as 'Castrum Temesiensis'. Temesv�r was one of the capitals of the Kingdom of Hungary at the time of the Anjou kings. In 1514 Prince J�nos Szapolyai executed here Gy�rgy D�zsa, the leader of the peasant revolt. 1552-1716 was under Turkish rule as a capital of the Temesv�r vilayet. 1718-1778 the settlement was the capital of the Governorate of Temesch. From 1781 Temeschwar is a Free Royal City and capital of Temes County. At the time of the Hungarian Independent War (1848-1849) the city and the fort was under Habsburg rule. Between 1850 and 1861 the settlement was the capital of the new province: Governorate of Temesch and Serbian Vojvodina. The settlement in 1910 was a city of the Kingdom of Hungary. Inhabitants in 1910: 72.555; 31.664 (43,6%) German, 28.552 (39,4%) Hungarian, 7.566 (10,4%) Rumanian, 3.482 (4,8%) Serb and 1291 (1,8%) other by mother tongue, 48.598 (67,0%) Roman Catholic, 11.227 (15,5%) Greek Ortodox, 6.728.(9,2) Jew, 3.532 (4,9%) Calvinist, 1.603 (2,2%) Lutheran and 867 (1,2%) other by religion. In 1919 the city was under French occupation. The Treaty of Trianon (1920) allocated it to Romania. In 1989 there was the first place of the anticommunist revolt in Romania.
Famous Hungarian celebrities were born in Timi�oara: general Gy�rgy Klapka (1820-1892), writer and arhitect K�roly K�s.
