Presentation of the municipality

Smarje pri Jelsah had community status before 1990s.

Description of the flag

The coat of arms of Smarje must have been in use before the 1990s, but the article in Banderas [ban] does not mention it, neither the flag. In any case, the community (re?)adopted the coat of arms and flag on 14 December1992 by decision Odlok o grbu in zastavi obcine Smarje pri Jelsah, adopted on 15 December1992, and published in the official Slovene gazette Uradni list Republike Slovenije, nr. 61, 24 December1992, pp. 3488-9, with effect on 2 January 1993.

The flag is based on the 1st and 4th fields of the coat of arms, and it is diagonally striped in blue and white, with the coat of arms in the middle. Ratio is 1:2. The decision prescribes that "the exact position of the coat of arms, its size and all proportions are determined by a special annex to the decision". I am not aware of such annex, and image is provided tentatively, based on written description only.

Coat of arms

[Coat of arms of Smarje pri Jelsah]by Zeljko Heimer

The coat of arms of Smarje can be blazoned as:

Quartered 1 and 4: bendy azure and argent; 2: per pale or and azure a pair of ornamented oxen horns countercharged; 3: or, an alder tree branch in bend sable leaved vert.

The coat of arms is outlined gules. The second quarter is the coat of arms of Gaisruckov family, the owners of Jelse castle. The branch in the third field cants the name of the castle by which the town was built.
