Coat of arms

[Coat of arms of Markovci]by Zeljko Heimer

Source: Municipal website

The coat of arms in use in Markovci can be blazoned as:

Azure, a lion passant or over a fesswise wheat ear of the same over a kurent mask or with face argent and tongued gules.

The region of Ptuj (where Markovci is) is well-known for the celebration of the fasnik ,usually in February, during which horrific masks with long red tongues are worn. Such masked people are called kurenti.

Discussions on the symbols of Markovci

According to an article in Tednik, Band LII, nr 49, Ptuj, 9 December 1999:

'The members of the assembly of the Markovci community held on Thursday, 2nd December [1999], on the 1st regular session of the assembly discussed the coat of arms and the flag of the community. The assembly members were a bit surprised, when they found out that the Markovci symbols - the coat of arms and the flag - do not fulfill the requirements of heraldry.'
' That is obviously not of much of their concern, since they decided to retain both symbols in the same shape as they were adopted' is stated further in the article.
