 Lučenec flag

Lucenec flag submitted through Rob Raeside, 23 July 1999

Lučenec lies in the middle of the wide Lučenec basin on the main railway line Zvolen-Polesivec and on the road from Zvolen to Rožňava. It has also an air service. It was founded in the 13th century and was the scene of violent fighting during the Turkish raids into Slovakia in the 16th-17th centuries.
Jarig Bakker, 17 Apr 2000

Lučenec (Hungarian: Losonc; German: Losontz) has 28.861 inhabitants (16,7% Hungarian; 1990 census). First mentioned in 1100 as "Lutetia Hungarorum", but its territory was inhabited for centuries. There was a great battle between John Hunyadi, regent of the Kingdom of Hungary and the Hussites. The settlement was a town in Nógrád (Slovakian: Novohrad = New Castle) county of Hungary. The town was 1554-1606 under Turkish rule. In 1910 Losonc had 12.939 inhabitants (82,2% Hungarian, 12,9% Slovakian and 3,3% German. The town was in Nógrád county of Hungary till 1919/1920 (Czechoslovakian occupation). 1920-1938 Czechoslovakian, 1938-1944 Hungarian. In 1947 reallocated to Czechoslovakia. 1946-1949 some of its Hungarian inhabitants deported to Czechia and to Hungary.
