«How come then that the Uruguayan football national team wears
celeste jerseys?». After some research I found that in 1910,
in Buenos Aires, just before a football match between the national
teams of both countries [Uruguay and Argentina],
it happened that both teams were about to wear white clothings. To
avoid confusions, it was agreed that the Uruguayans would wear
celeste, while the locals would keep their white shirts.
Those were the distinctive colours of our respective national teams.
The Uruguayan football teams (national team only), wear the
celeste to this day. The Argentinians, instead, later
changed their colour to a vertical striped shirt, alternating blue
(darker than celeste) [thus inversely of their
respective national flags].
