A centre for various religions,
Hajo is about 24 km across the river Brahmaputra, around the city
of Guwahati. A section of Buddhists believe that the Hayagriba Madhab,
best known in the group of Hindu temples by to be where the Buddha
attained Nirvana. It is also a Muslim pilgrimage centre since the
mosque known as the Pao Mecca built by Pir Ghiasuddin Aulia, is
supposed to have about one-fourth (Pao) of the sanctity of Mecca.
