or Crangannore is set on the banks of the Periyar estuary, 40 km
from Kochi. It is located in the far south of Malabar. The temple
here requires devotees to carry pepper along as an offering for
the gods. One and a half kilometer from this town is Cheraman Juma
Masjid, India's first mosque.
How to Reach
Two superfast buses
ply daily from Kochi (50 km) to Kodungallor and similarly from Thrissur
in the north.
A word about Kochi
Kochi is also known
as Cochin. It is an interesting city, and is a perfect reflection
of the eclecticism of Kerala. It also has an airport, a railway
terminus and the hotels. It is place that was renovated sometime
in the past by the Dutch. And is a home to some of India's most
beautiful murals.
This is one place
where tourists can see the oldest church in India, winding streets
crammed with 500-year-old Portuguese houses, cantilevered Chinese
fishing nets, a Jewish community the roots of which go back to the
Diaspora, a 16th-century synagogue, and a palace built by the Portuguese
and given to the Raja of Cochin.
