PILGRIMAGES - KONARK

The famous Sun Temple of Konark is located around the city of Bhubneshwar. It was constructed in the 13th century and is devoted to the Sun God. The part symbolizing the movement of the sun blazing across the horizon- a huge stone chariot 'moving' on wheels, pulled by seven Goliathan harnessed horses - existstill date. However, the huge shikhara containing the gods images which once stood behind the chariot has collapsed. The entire stone 'moving' table has fantastic dimensions.

The fallen shikhara, rose once to a height of 200 feet. It was tethered to the horses through a chariot measuring more than 50 square feet square at the base and rising a 100 feet to the pyramidical roof. Each of its 24 wheels of 10-feet diameter is heavily sculptured. The rising tiers of the roof are embellished with larger-than-life musicians and dancers celebrating the rising of the Sun God, entertaining Him through His ritual awakening so that He is inspired to energise the world for yet another day. And again, the master erotica-sculptors were irrepressible. The celebratory copulation continues unabated from top to bottom, from side to side, seeking the God's blessings in their attempts to reach the pinnacle of bliss.
