During any festive
season, the whole city of Andhra
brightens up and there is lot of excitement in the air.
If you drop in during any of the festival
time, watching or taking part in the festivities can be an interesting
experience.
Apart from major Indian festivals like the
Holi and Diwali which are celebrated with traditional fervour and
joy, there are a few festivals which are celebrated in special Andhra
style.
Bathkamma
Bathkamma is special to
the Telangana region that lasts for almost a month.During the festival,
Goddess Bathkamma's idol is worshipped and is made to float on the
rivers and lakes. A widely known festival in Telengana area that
falls on Asvija Shuddha Dasami (Sep/Oct) is Bathkamma Panduga.
It is women in memory
of a Vaisya married woman, celebrated for nine days by married who
was killed by her own brother at the instigation of his wife. The
murdered woman is believed to have manifested herself in her grave
as a flowering tree. The cities is celebrated at the onset of summer
to Mahankali Jathara, a procession in the twin propitiate the local
village deities so that pestilence does not strike.These festivals
are celebrated with joy and gaiety with night-long bouts of dancing,
singing, and feasting.
Visakha Utsav
'Visakha Utsav' is organised
by A.P. Tourism every year from the third Friday to Sunday of January.
The festival comprises of a variety of cultural programmes, sports
events, food fair and exhibitions, fashion shows, trekking etc.
Deccan Festival
'Deccan Festival' is celebrated
by A.P.Tourism every year on 25th February wherein Hyderabad's Art,
Crafts, Culture and Cuisine are highlighted. 'Pearls & Bangles'
Fair and food fair with items covering both Andhra and Hyderabad
cuisine are part of the festivities. Cultural programmes such as
Gazal nights, Qawalli etc. with renowned artists are organised.
Rayalaseema Food & Dance Festival
Rayalaseema
Food & Dance festival is organized by A.P.Tourism at Tirupati to
coincide with Bramhostavam of Lord Sri Venkateswara in the Tamil
month of Peratasi (October).
Lumbini Festival
Lumbini festival is organized
from the 2nd Friday to Sunday of December every year at Hyderabad
and Nagarjunasagar to highlight and celebrate the 'Buddhist Heritage'
of Andhra Pradesh.
