This Green Place, was carved
out of Punjab after India became independent. It is a land of fat,
flat, fields & villages where the patriarch is still a venerated
figure & politics generally pivot around rural& village-community
loyalties. Chandigarh is the Capital of Haryana. On the highways,
the state government has constructed roadside resorts replete with
landscaped gardens, lakes, motels, restaurants, shops & extensive
recreational areas. The tourist complexes of Haryana have thus become
the weekend gateway for people from Delhi & the neighbouring states.
And the Haryanis have shown a growing appreciation for the good
life.The State has a very rich culture and heritage and is becoming
a very important tourist centre of north.
Haryana is the 16th largest
state in area and population. This state has a very fertile land
and is called as the Green Land of India". The modern state
of Haryana came into being on November 1st 1966. The state is bounded
by Uttar Pradesh in east, Punjab in west, Himachal Pradesh in north
and Rajasthan in south. Union Territory of Delhi is landlocked on
3 sides by Haryana.
Haryana can be divided into
two natural area sub-Himalayan Terai and Indo-Gangetic plain. The
plain is fertile and slopes from north to south with a height above
the sea level, averaging between 700 and 900 ft. South-west of Haryana
is dry, sandy and barren. Haryana has no perennial river. The only
river which flows through Haryana is the Ghaggar, which passes through
northern fringes of the state. For most of the year, climate of
Haryana is of a pronounced character-very hot in summer and markedly
cold in winter.

History
Haryana has a proud history
going back to the vedic age. The state was the home of the legendry
Bharata dynasty, which has given the name "Bharat" to India, Haryana
is immortalised in the great epic Mahabharata. Kurukshetra, the
scene of the epic battle between the Kaurvas and the Pandavas, is
situated in Haryana. The state continued to play a leading role
in the history of India till the advent of Muslims and the rise
of Delhi as the imperial capital of India. Thereafter, Haryana functioned
as an adjunct to Delhi and practically remained anonymous till the
first war of India's Independence in 1857, when the people of Haryana
joined the leaders of Indian revolt against the British Government.
This state has an agriculture based economy. About 80% of its people
depend on agriculture for their livelihood. The state also has a
very sound industrial base.

Haryana produces the largest
number of tractors in the country. It is well known for its handloom
products. Panipat has earned the reputation of being the "weaver's
city" of India for its exquisite hand- tufted woolen carpets and
colourful handloom products. Haryana is a beneficiary of the multi-purpose
project on Setluj with Beas, where it shares benefit with Punjab
and Rajasthan.
Major irrigation projects are Western Yamuna Canal, Bhakra Canal
System and Gurgaon Canal. The state has completed Jui Loharu and
Sewani lift irrigation schemes. Jawaharlal Nehru irrigation scheme,
the biggest of its kind shall be completed soon. From education
point of view, Haryana has some of the best Universities like-Maharshi
Dayanand University at Rohtak and Kurukshetra University at Kurukshetra.
