In Nagaland weaving is a traditional art handed down through the
generations. Each of the major tribes has its own uniquely designed
and coloured shawl. The Ao warrior would only wear the Tsungkotepsu,
a red and black striped shawl with a white band in the middle embroidered
with various symbols. Excellent buys are Naga shawls which are warm
and colourful, handwoven shoulder bags, decorative spears, table mats,
wood carvings and bamboo work. The sales emporia of Nagaland Handloom
and Handicrafts Development Corporation opposite the State Transport
bus at Kohima station is the best place for Naga handicrafts. There
are a number of shops in the super market which stock Naga shawls, clothes,
crockery and knick-knacks.
