Title: Deutsche Wappen. Bundesrepublik Deutschland
(in English: German Coats-of-Arms. Federal Republic of Germany)
Medium: book
Main author(s): Klemens Stadler
Secondary author(s): Max Reinhart (ill.)
Edition (publisher: place): Angelsachsen-Verlag: Bremen (Germany)
Language: German (High)
Edition date: 1964-1971 (1st ed.)
Pages: 855 (approx.100 per volume)
Format: 25×18 cm
Remarks: work in 8 volumes

The standard work for (West-) German municipal coats-of-arms. Paperback, colourful illustrations (nearly only coats-of-arms, height of the Arms each 4 cm), original edition price 14.80 DEM per volume, artwork done by Max Reinhart (designer and heraldist living in Passau, Germany). Flags [mostly consisting of two horizontal stripes] are described but not illustrated; Stadler is frequently used as a vexillological source however in absence of any better. Dr. Stadler was director at the Bavarian Central State Archive in Munich. In this way he was able to get the best sources and contacts to other archives. He died on 25 August 1975.
Dieter Linder, 14 May 2000

As excellent as Stadler is on the subject of coats-of-arms, his notes on flags seem to be added only as an afterthought; sometimes they’re quite confusing. Also, most of it was written before the administrative reorganisation, so (especially with regard to district flags) its information must be treated with caution.
Stefan Schwoon, 31 Jan 2001
