The tricolor flag of the municipality was instituted by law of 7 February 1977. The law established that:

Art. 1 - The municipal flag of Amparo is hereby instituted, being designed by Lauro Ribeiro Escobar of the State Council of Honors and Merit, and is described thus: Rectangular red field with a white triangle based at the hoist, charged with a blue triangle surcharged with a white triangle, and thereon the coat of arms instituted by law no. 166 of 20 August 1929 and reestablished by law no. 23 of 4 December 1948, without the supporters or scroll.

Art. 2 - The flag thus instituted has 14 units of hoist by 20 units of fly; the white triangle placed on the field has a base coinciding with the hoist and 18.5 units of altitude [i.e., length toward the fly--trans.]; the blue triangle with which it is charged has the same base with an altitude of 13 units; the white triangle with which that is surcharged also has the same base and an altitude of 10 units; and the coat of arms is five units high.

Art. 3 - The municipal flag of Amparo has the following interpretation:

    I - The color red has the heraldic significance of audacity, courage, valor, grace, intrepidity, conspicuous nobility, generosity and honor, evoking the fearless spirit of the citizens, who from the foundation of the settlement, from generation to generation, have confronted with courage all manner of troubles and conquered obstacles to realize the greatness of their native soil;

    II - The color white represents happiness, purity, truth, frankness, integrity, fairness, beauty, temperance; it is the symbol of peace, indicating that, although prepared to fight when dignity requires, the Amparense people are of a peaceful nature and long for progress, enjoying the natural beauties with which a divine Omnipotence has blessed the municipality.

    III - The color blue symbolizes justice, beauty, sweetness, nobility, recreation, vigilance, serenity, zeal, and loyalty, attributes of the administrators and citizens in conducting public matters and in the harmonious and loyal conduct of the destinies of the municipality.

    IV - The superimposed triangles, forming points of lances, demonstrate the dynamism and hard working nature of the citizens and the irresistible impulse with which Amparo moves forward on the broad paths to a happy and promising future.
