On 1 January 2002, ten villes at the Saint-Laurent southern riverbank were constitute the grande ville de Lévis (124,487 inhabitants). These ten villes are Lévis, Pintendre, Saint-Joseph-de-la-Pointe-de-Lévy, Saint-Romuald, Saint-Jean-Chrysostome, Charny, Saint-Nicolas, Saint-Rédempteur, Saint-Étienne-de-Lauzon, and Breakeyville. The municipal council of the new ville was selected from an election held on 4 November 2001.
