Description

Red-white-green with the arms. A curiosity: the fourth quarter of the arms shows an acorn, a card symbol. This refers to the fact that the popular card game of Skat originated in Altenburg. Sources: flag from Ulle 1999, arms from the Thuringia official website.

Stefan Schwoon, 12 March 2001

Flag adopted 03.06.1996, according to Dirk Schönberger's Administrative Divisions of the World website. From Ralf Hartemink's International Civic Arms website:

The arms were granted on April 28, 1995. The rose in the first quarter is derived from the old County and counts of Altenburg, which existed until the 15th century. It later became a possession of the Wettin family as Sachsen-Altenburg. The arms of the Wettin family is shown in the third quarter. The second quarter shows the arms of the Pleissenland, which now forms part of the district. The fourth quarter shows an acorn, the highest playing card in the Skat game, which originated in the district.

Literature: Linder and Olzog 1996.
