Description

Apparently the county does not have an officially recognised flag. Ulle 1999 says that a red-yellow flag is used inofficially. Sources: flag from Ulle 1999, arms from the Thuringia official website.

Stefan Schwoon, 14 March 2001

Flag adopted 13.09.1990, according to Dirk Schönberger's Administrative Divisions of the World website. Colours from the arms, from Ralf Hartemink's International Civic Arms website:

The arms were granted on September 13, 1990. The chequered field is derived from the arms of the County Hohenstein, to which the district historically belonged. The tree trunk symbolises the destroyed city of Nordhausen during the Second World War. The new branch symbolises the new future under a bright sky, which is symbolised by the golden field.

Literature: Linder and Olzog 1996.
