Description

Blue-white-red in proportions 1:2:1 with the arms. The first quarter shows the arms of Mühlhausen, the capital of the county. The millstones are canting (Mühle = mill). Sources: flag from Ulle 2000, arms from the Thuringia official website.

Stefan Schwoon, 16 March 2001

Flag adopted 01.11.1995, according to Dirk Schönberger's Administrative Divisions of the World website, which quotes Ulle 2000 as reference. From Ralf Hartemink's International Civic Arms website:

The arms were granted on January 22, 1996. The arms combine elements from the arms of the territories to which the district historically belonged: the eagle of the city of Mühlhausen, the lion of the Dukes of Thuringia in the second quarter, in the third quarter the wheel of the State of Mainz and in the fourth quarter the arms of the Principality of Schwarzburg-Sondershausen.

Literature: Linder and Olzog 1996.
