Historical Flag

by Jaume Olle', 19 October 1998

Massa-Carrara was territory of the Malapina dinasty until XVI century. The family standart was used, but is unknown to me. in the XVI Century it was governed by the Cybo dinasty, and also their family standard was used (also unknown for me except that included in their shield over the Malaspina one) .In 1731 Cybo-Malaspina dinasty was dinasty ended and their heirs were the Este dinasty of Modena from 1743. The arms of Modena-Este and Cybo-Malaspina were merged and Massa used after1790 (and until1829) the white flag with the Cybo-Malaspina shield simplified, with Austrian scutcheon.
After 1829 the Modena flag was used (I see a little variation in plate attribued to Massa, but I believe that is a mistake)

Massa flag (1829 - ?) was a variant of Modena flag (?) with three red flowers or trebol (?). I noted this image more that 25 years ago and I dont remember the source.
