Morelia is a city located Center-West of Mexico, capital of the State of
Michoacn de ocampo. It is placed in the
corillera "Neovolcnica", between the Cuitzeo and Ptzcuaro lakes.
Morelia is an important agriculture and livestock industry center.
Industries: food, chemistry, wood, and textile. Colonial monuments:
baroque cathedral. It was founded in 1540 under the name of Valladolid. It received the actual
name in 1828 in honor to Generalsimo Jos Mara Morelos y Pavn
(1765-1815), who was born there.

In 1537 a group of Spanish families, wanted to move down to another place, and left the ancient province capital, Ptzcuaro, and requested to the Spanish crown, the territory for their new city, and in 1541, Viceroy Don Antonio de Mendoa (old Spanish for Mendoza), gave the permission for building the new capital, in the valley of Guayangareo. Valladolid was founded in 1541, and Emperor Chearles I of Spain, V of Germany, granted the arms to the city and the kingdom.
The colonial flag with the arms in the center was created for the province.
It was used until the fall [March 19, 1823] of Iturbide [as Michoacn flag],
and forbidden (by the republicans) because of
its "Hispanic" colors.
It became to be used once more but as
symbolic of the city [Morelia] about its 450th anniversary
(1991) of its foundation. The flag is currently hoisted in the
city's square and other several public buildings.
This information was gotten by means of a person dedicated to study the
city's history.

For popular usage, the Morelia flag is plain red over yellow, without no arms.

This is a modern version of the coat of arms
granted to the city of Valladolid de Michoacn about 1541
by Charles I of Spain and V of Germany.
