Achtkarspelen refers to eight 'karspels' - church villages (parishes - Ed),
which have been symbolized in the 8-pointed star on the flag. The municipality
is in northeast Friesland, southeast of the city of Dokkum. The flag was adopted
28 April 1958 by municipal resolution. The colors are derived from the municipal
CoA. Not to be confused with the star in the flag of Kollumerland (says Kl.
Sierksma, Nederlands vlaggenboek,
1962)
Jarig Bakker 18 August 1999.
Achtkarspelen:
On 28-4-1958 de municipality council established the flag of the municipality: A
symbolic representation of the municipal Arms: "Three stripes
red-white-green, 1 : 4 : 1, with in the white stripe at the hoist side a
blue eight-pointed star, one point pointing to the upper side, being 1/12th of
the flag's length removed from the hoist, upper, and lower stripe." The
colours are derived from the CoA, the star is a combination of eight spires as a
symbol for the eight parishes.
The shield is: On a field of silver, a red parish church with 8 spires, roofs
and spires blue, on a green base.
Under Achtkarspelen it says: "The name relates to the eight parishes the
municipality developed from: Augustinusga, Buitenpost, Drogeham, Kooten,
Kortwoude, Lutjepost, Surhuizum, and Twijzel." Buitenpost is the capital.
("Achtkarpelen" translates to "Eight parishes".)
