Tiel is in the heart of the Betuwe, West Gelderland, famous for jam making. The city is one of the oldest Dutch cities, founded c. 500
AD.
The flag was adopted 9 June 1954, derived from the municipal CoA; as an old Hansa town it had the right to put the double imperial eagle on
the flag, but someone forgot to do so. In the Carolingian time Tiel was a 'Villa Regis' (a royal town) - so it had more more than one reason.
