Tucked away in the countryside to the east of Bangkok, this
provincial town, is home to one of the most sacred Buddha
images in Thailand the Phra Phuttha Sothon, which is housed
in the Wat Sothon Wararam Worawihaan. Phuket is a traveler's
paradise, it even challenge the beauty of Pattaya.
The small tropical island offers visitors a virtual year-around
water wonderland. Phuket has a moist, tropical climate,
influenced chiefly by monsoon winds that vary in direction
according to the season.
The water around Phuket and its islets are ideal for sea
kayaking, snorkeling, and diving. Guides can be hired to
take you out to the more secluded islands, and to the series
of limestone islands that served as the backdrop for the
1974 James Bond movie, "The Man with the Golden Gun."
There is a wide range of shopping possibilities in Phuket,
especially in the main tourist destination on the island.
From souvenirs to shoes, tailor made clothes to bags and
jewelry to antiques, nearly everything is available in a
variety of quality and price categories.
Getting There and Moving Around
By air
Thai Airways International operates daily from Bangkok.
There are also direct air links with Japan, Hong Kong, Korea,
Malaysia, Singapore and Europe.
By sea
There are many ferry services to the island and Phuket
remains a favorite stop for cruises.
By rail
The railway network extends over 4600km (2860 miles), linking
all major towns with the exception of Phuket.
By road
The buses have inter-urban routes to all provinces.
Moving Around
Phuket is linked to the mainland by a causeway and is easily
accessible by road as well as by air.
