Phuket City Guide

Thailand > Phuket
Tucked away in the countryside to the east of Bangkok, this provincial town, is home to one of the most sacred Buddha images in Thailand the Phra Phuttha Sothon, which is housed in the Wat Sothon Wararam Worawihaan. Phuket is a traveler's paradise, it even challenge the beauty of Pattaya.

The small tropical island offers visitors a virtual year-around water wonderland. Phuket has a moist, tropical climate, influenced chiefly by monsoon winds that vary in direction according to the season.

The water around Phuket and its islets are ideal for sea kayaking, snorkeling, and diving. Guides can be hired to take you out to the more secluded islands, and to the series of limestone islands that served as the backdrop for the 1974 James Bond movie, "The Man with the Golden Gun."

There is a wide range of shopping possibilities in Phuket, especially in the main tourist destination on the island. From souvenirs to shoes, tailor made clothes to bags and jewelry to antiques, nearly everything is available in a variety of quality and price categories.

Getting There and Moving Around

By air

Thai Airways International operates daily from Bangkok. There are also direct air links with Japan, Hong Kong, Korea, Malaysia, Singapore and Europe.

By sea

There are many ferry services to the island and Phuket remains a favorite stop for cruises.

By rail

The railway network extends over 4600km (2860 miles), linking all major towns with the exception of Phuket.

Moving Around

Phuket is linked to the mainland by a causeway and is easily accessible by road as well as by air.
