A.D. 1931 -- The Communists set up their
own government under the leadership of Mao Tse-tung. Japan
seizes Manchuria in northern China.

A.D. 1937 - 1945 -- War breaks out between China and
Japan
|
|
A.D.1945 -- After Japan surrenders to China at the
end of World War II, civil war starts again between the Nationalists
and the Communists.

A.D. 1949 -- Chinese Communists defeat the Nationalists
and form the People's Republic of China, led by Chairman Mao
Tse-tung. The Communists start restoration work on the Great
Wall, much of which has again collapsed.

A.D. 1966-- Mao Tse-tung starts the Cultural Revolution,
a reform movement designed to eliminate anything or anyone
opposed to the government. Several hundred miles of the Great
Wall are torn down to get the stone for construction projects.

A.D. 1976 -- Mao Tse-tung dies. The Great Wall becomes
a symbol of China in an effort to define modern China's national
identity.

A.D. 1979 -- Deng Xiaoping takes control of China.
|
|
A.D. 1984 -- Deng Xiaoping takes control of China.
Deng Xiaoping puts forth the slogan, "Let us love our China
and restore our Great Wall!" Groups in China begin working
to restore the Great Wall so that it will remain a testament
to China's long history.
