The Mughal Emperor, Shah Jahan built the Taj in the memory of his lovely wife Mumtaz Mahal. The queen had passed away in childbirth in the year 1631. The grief stricken emperor decided that he would create a mausoleum which would be as exquisite and refined as his beloved wife had been. Never before in the Islamic traditions had a tomb of such grandiose scale been built in the memory of a wife!
