About the flag

Parted per fess of the arms of Jamtland (Jämtland), an elk hunted with dog and falcon, and Härjedalen, three hammers (one seen from its front) and a pair of tongs.

Prior to the grant, the county had sometimes used the two provincial arms side by side or in a shield parted per pale, but the present design was thought to be better, given the charges in the arms, when the county was to get officially granted arms.

Within the county are also parts of Ångermanland and Hälsingland, but they are not represented in the arms and flag.

Blazon

Official blazon in Swedish: "Delad sköld: I. Jämtlands, II. Härjedalens vapen".
(The arms of Jamtland is blazoned "I blått fält en gående älg av silver med en lyftande falk på ryggen och i posten åtföljd av en vänstervänd, upprest hund, båda av guld". Note that the elk is not armed gules according to the blazon, but it has however been given that in most images - even in the first image drawn up at the time of the grant. The arms of Härjedalen is blazoned "I fält av silver en framifrån sedd svart räckhammare med röd skaftända, åtföljd till höger av en svart smidestång och till vänster av två stolpvis ordnade och ställda svarta smideshammare med röda skaft, den övre störtad")

Blazoned in English: "Per fess, Azure an Elk passant Argent armed Gules attacked from behind by a flying Falcon Or and from front by a Dog rampant of the same, and Argent a Sledgehammer Sable with Core Gules between Tongs of the second and two Hammers adorsed in pale of the second handled Gules."

English blazon by Zeljko Heimer, 1 August 2001
