The Citadel was built by Salah Al Din Al Ayyubi in 1183
AD overlooking the city of Cairo on a spur of Moqattam Hills.
It houses a number of important monuments including the
Mosque of Soliman Pasha, the Alabaster Mosque (Mohamed Ali
Mosque), the 90 meter deep Bir Yyusuf (Joseph's well ) and
Al Gawhara Palace.
It was named so, because its walls are faced with alabaster
on both sides. International flights direct to Cairo, or
via many European and Eastern European cities, can be found
arranged.
