Administration
Mauritius achieved independence in 1968 and became a republic in
1992, with its constitution based on the Westminster pattern. Since
1992, the head of State has been a president elected by the National
Assembly. Executive power resides in the prime minister who is aided
by a group of cabinet chosen from the National Assembly. The National
Assembly contains 62 members directly elected from 20 constituencies
in Mauritius and 2 constituencies in Rodrigues.
