Place d'Armes, the main esplanade, is lined
with palm trees, with the harbour at one end and the old
colonial government house at the other, parts of which date
from the eighteenth century. Places which are worth a visit
are the Government House and the Municipal Theatre.
There are also two cathedrals, a mosque, a Chinese casino,
a Supreme Court, some 18th century Barracks, and a Natural
History Museum. On one side of the Place d'Armes is the
central market, or bazaar, a souk-like place where one can
buy almost anything. On the other side is the ancient Jardins
de la Compagnie (Company Gardens), and the small museum
of the Mauritius Institute (with a reconstructed Dodo among
its exhibits).
