On the southern coast of Cape Province, lies the major
international surfing center,St. Francis Bay. The water
is never too cold for comfort and at Cape St.Francis itself,
at the western end of the bay, there appear in winter the
waves celebrated in surfers'lore as Bruce's Beauties.
These reputedly perfect surfing waves are named after the
American film producer and surfing enthusiast Bruce Brown,
who was the first to draw attention to their sporting potential.
The only imperfection of Bruce's Beauties is that they are
elusive requiring special weather and tide conditions and
appearing on perhaps only 25 days a year. Further northeast
lies the resort of Jeffrey's Bay and the superb surfing
spot known as Supertubes.
The waves here, second only to Bruce's Beauties for the
sport they provide, are about 5 meters high and close to
a kilometer long, forming fine tubes that move with power
and speed.
