Built in the 17th century, this fortress stands on the
highest point in Macau and houses a chapel and a lighthouse.
It is a very visible landmark of Macau. The chapel is in
the style of Portuguese hermitages of the 17th century and
has a vaulted ceiling. Constructed by local born Portuguese,
Carlos Vicente da Rocha, the lighthouse is the oldest on
the coast of China. It was first lit on 24 September 1865
and since then has never ceased to glow, providing a guiding
beacon to the passing boats.
Coin operated telescopes cover the major angles. Hong Kong's
biggest island, Lantau, can be seen with the naked eyes
on a clear day.
Opening hours: 9.00am - 5.30pm daily.
