Kun Iam Tong, also known as the Temple of the Goddess of
Mercy, is one of the biggest and wealthiest of Macau's temples
with a huge entrance gate and roofs clustered with porcelain
figures. The temple is also famous as this was the place
where the United Sates signed its first treaty of trade
and friendship with China in 1844.
Apart from the statues of Kun Iam and Buddhas, there is
also the gold lacquer figures of the 18 wise men of China,
one of which is Marco Polo who is said to have embraced
Buddhism at the court of the Great Khan during his visit
to China.
Behind the temple is a large Chinese garden where in particular
the famous "Lovers' Tree" stands. Actually an intertwine
of branches of four ancient banyan trees, Lovers' Tree is
a symbol of marital fidelity.
