The building facing the main civic square of Macau on Avenida
Almeida Ribeiro is a classic and outstanding example of
traditional Portuguese architecture in the territory. In
its heyday at the beginning of Macau, the Leal Senado's
power and influence was almost paramount. Today, it operates
in the more limited capacity as the Municipal Council. The
building, modeled on a famous institution at Coimbra in
Portugal, has a public library and two inner chambers containing
magnificent examples of the Portuguese wood carver's art.
