One of the most beautiful temples in Macau, this temple
is also known as the Temple of Lotus, as its location is
close to the Border Gate, on which Macau is likened by the
Chinese as a lotus flower. The temple is entirely Chinese
in concept and perhaps the best example of Chinese architecture
in Macau. In centuries past, it also served as an inn for
travelers from China, the most famous of all being Commissioner
Lin Tse-Hsu, whose statue stands in the courtyard.
It is famous for its decorative bas-relief clay friezes
of historic tableaux and natural scenes. There is also a
tableau of the Chinese meeting the Portuguese officials,
a display of opium pipes, pictures of the burning of the
opium and information about the scourge of opium addiction.
