Taipa used to consist of two hilly islands and a protected
harbour which provided an anchorage for clipper ships and
foreign traders with China in the 18th and early 19th centuries.
The two islands merged as the channel between them was silted
up, providing land for vegetable and duck farms, firecracker
factories and more recently apartment blocks. Taipa now
houses the Macau International Airport, Taipa Village, various
Chinese temples, The University of Macau, Taipa House Museum
and the Macau Jockey Club.
