Alor Setar

You can never go hungry in this "Rice-bowl of Malaysia" state. Kedah has an extensive land of rice fields all over the state. It is also the site of Malaysia's most extensive ruins dated from the 18th centuries. Its capital city, Alor Setar is the core of state's government and the business. It is also one of the fastest developing state in Malaysia, with massive restructuring of industrialism, commercialism and tourism.

One of the interesting places to visit in the city is the Alor Setar Tower, the tallest communication tower in the northern region. Its revolving restaurant allows you to appreciate the city's view, while dining. On the other hand, Alor Setar is a state of rich heritage. Among the places to visit are the unique muzium- Royal Boat House, the house of royal orchestra- Balai Nobat and the Istana Anak Bukit.

 
 

Alor Setar is also a distinctive state with nature wonders and attractions. Some of the top destinations in Alor Setar are the Kedah's Peak Jerai Mount, Kenong Rimba Park, Air Hangat Hot Springs and Lake Pedu.

A few miles from the mainland is the exquisite 99 Islands of Langkawi. A unique place of well- preserved natural beauty and an island of rich myths and legends, is making its name as a top tourist destination in Asia. Some of the top places in Langkawi that is worth visiting are Mahsuri's Tomb, Field of Burnt Rice and the Island of Pregnant Maiden.

Getting There and Moving Around

By air

The local airport is approximately 11km north of Alor Setar. Malaysia Airlines domestic flights fly daily to and from Alor Setar from Kuala Lumpur via either Penang or Kota Bharu.

By rail

The Keretapi Tanah Melayu (KTM) services major towns in Kedah.

By road

The north-south expressway is a bonus to any traveler. The roads are easily accessible from major towns and cities in the Peninsular Malaysia. It takes about 8 hours drive from Kuala Lumpur to Alor Setar. Bus services are also available in most towns or cities.

Moving Around

Local transportation like buses, cabs and car rental are available for cruising around the city.
