Many locals believed that the curse put on by Mahsuri, the
legendary daughter of Langkawi, brought difficult times
for Langkawi. Soon afterwards, the island was overrun by
the Siamese. The chief ordered the rice stored in the granary
to be burned, in order to prevent it from falling into Siamese
hands.
What are thought to be the remnants of the burnt rice can
be seen today at the spot where the original granary stood,
now known as the Field of Burnt Rice. A few charred grains
sometimes appear, usually after a heavy storm. They are
highly sought after, being valued as a cure for stomach
pains and fever.
