Penang is an island located off the north-west coast of
Peninsula Malaysia, it is also known as the Pearl of the
Orient. The equatorial climate here makes Penang warm and
humid, with rainfall almost all throughout the year. Being
one of the 13 states in the country, Penang consists of
the island and a coastal strip of the mainland. Seberang
Jaya and Penang Island are separated by a narrow channel
and is linked by the Penang Bridge.
The Bridge is a 13.5 km. architectural wonder, and is
ranked as the longest bridge in Asia. Officially opened
by our Prime Minister, Dato' Dr. Mahathir during the year
1985, offering a beautiful view of the open sea, ships and
a magnificent coastline. The bridge costs RM800 million,
and it took 5 years to build. Before the bridge was built,
travelers depended upon ferry services to cross over the
Penang Straits.
