Along the coast of Sintra, from Sγo Juliγo in the north
to Cape Roca in the south, are countless beaches with soft
golden sand bathed by the Atlantic. The best known are undoubtedly
Samarra, Magoito, Azenhas do Mar, Praia das Maηγs, Praia
Grande and Praia da Adraga. Also tucked away along the coast
are little rocky coves that have become very popular with
Portuguese and foreign tourists.
The Atlantic coast is rich in marine species, both animal
and vegetable. Among the molluscs, for example, are octopus,
cuttlefish and squid, mussels, limpets, clams and barnacles,
among others. The crustaceans found here include various
kinds of crab, including spider and rock crabs, lobster
and rock lobster, the last two in zones further from the
coast.
Grey mullet, porgie bream, bass, parrot fish, sole and,
in deeper water, grey beam, moray eel, electric ray and
angler fish and others are to be found in this coastal area.
