Travellers Essentials
Passport
A valid passport is needef for thr duration stay up to 8 months
from the date of issue. Nationals of Czech Republic, can enter
the country with a valid national ID card.
Visa
Is required by all except:
a)Nationals of the UK for stays of up to 180 days.
b)Nationals of other EU countries for stays of up to 90 days
(except nationals of Italy for up to 30 days.
c)Nationals of Canada, Estonia, Iceland, Korea (Rep. of),
Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Malaysia, Malta, Monaco,
Norway, Poland, San Marino, Slovenia and Switzerland for up
to 90 days.
d)Nationals of Belarus, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cuba, Cyprus, Hungary,
Israel, Romania, Russian Federation, South Africa, USA and
Vatican City for up to 30 days.
e)Nationals of Singapore for up to 14 days.
f)Nationals of the Czech Republic for an unlimited period.
Currency
Koruna (Sk) = 100 halierov. Also known as the Slovak Crown
or Slovenskα koruna. Notes are in denominations of Sk5000,
1000, 500, 100, 50 and 20. Coins are in denominations of Sk10,
5, 2 and 1, and 50, 20 and 10 halierov.
Currency Exchange
Foreign currency (including travellers cheques) can be exchanged
at bureaux de change, main hotels, all banks, road border
crossings, as well as post offices and major travel agencies.
Credit Cards
Major cards such as American Express, Diners Club, Visa and
MasterCard may be used to exchange currency and are also accepted
in the more expensive hotels, restaurants and shops. Check
with your credit card company for details of merchant acceptability
and other services which may be available.
Travelers Cheques
These are widely accepted. To avoid additional exchange rate
charges, travelers are advised to take travelers cheques in
US Dollars or Pounds Sterling.
Eurocheque
These can be cashed up to a maximum of Sk6500 per cheque.
Individuals may cash up to 3 cheques only.
Duty Free
The following goods may be imported into the Slovak Republic
by visitors 18 years of age or older without incurring customs
duty:
a)200 cigarettes or 100 cigarillos or 50 cigars or 250g of
tobacco products.
b)1liter of spirits, 2 liters of wine, 50g of perfume or 250ml
of eau de toilette.
c)Goods up to the value of Sk6000.
Getting There
By Air:
The Slovak Republic is served by Air Slovakia (GM), Czech
Airlines, Hemus Air Bulgaria, Tatra Air, Aeroflot, Air Ukraine,
Tunis Air, Continental Airlines, Tyrolean Airways and SWISSAIR.
By River:
International connections from Austria are possible on the
Danube which is also linked with the Rhine, the Black Sea
and Main.
By Rail:
The most convenient route to the Slovak Republic from Western
Europe is via Vienna or Prague. Slovakia's network also provides
direct connections with Hamburg, Berlin, Warsaw, Krakσw, Budapest,
Bucharest, Moscow, Lviv, Vilnius, St Petersburg and Kyiv.
By Road:
The Slovak Republic can be entered via the Czech Republic,
Poland, Ukraine, Hungary or Austria. There is a motorway from
Bratislava via Brno to Prague.
